Lothar Götz: Colours and Diamonds

Mucciaccia Gallery is delighted to invite you to the opening reception of Colours and Diamonds, presenting a new body of work by Lothar Götz (1963, Günzburg). Conceived specifically for the gallery, this suite of paintings and drawings deepens the artist’s long-standing investigation into the relational dynamics of form and colour, distilling his language of geometric abstraction into a singular, potent motif: the diamond.

Used as a structural constant through which variation unfolds, each work adheres to the same geometric design, yet shifts in colour generate entirely different spatial and emotional experiences. Each composition operates both independently and as part of a broader chromatic rhythm across the gallery space.

In Götz’s hands, the diamond becomes a structure of perceptual possibility: intuitive, rigorous, playful. Though grounded in formal abstraction, his practice remains emotive—driven by colour as a responsive and expressive force.

About the artist:

Born in Günzburg, Bavaria in 1963, Lothar Götz, who lives in London and Berlin, is Associate Professor of Fine Art at Sunderland University and has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally. A British Council Rome scholar in 2010, he studied at the Fachhochschule in Aachen; Universität Wuppertal; Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the Royal College of Art, London. Solo exhibitions have included at Gasworks Gallery and Chisenhale Gallery in London; Petra Rinck Gallery in Düsseldorf; Domobaal in London; David Risley Gallery in Copenhagen and at the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle. Public site-specific installations have included projects at Piccadilly Underground Station in London; at the Miro Foundation in Barcelona; Love Festival, Southbank Centre, London; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; Leeds Art Gallery; MIMA, Middlesbrough; Overbeckgesellschaft, Lübeck and the Towner, Eastbourne. Lothar Götz had a solo exhibition at Holden Gallery, Manchester, participated in Colour Space at Mucciaccia Gallery in Rome and was shortlisted for the Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2024.
