Gianfranco Meggiato

Born in 1963 in Venice where he attended the State Institute of Art studying sculpture in stone, bronze, wood and ceramics. Invited at the age of 16 and 21 by the City of Venice, he exhibits three sculptures at the Municipal Gallery Bevilacqua La Masa in Piazza San Marco.

In his work, Meggiato looks to the great masters of the twentieth century: Brancusi for his search for essentiality, Moore for the interior-exterior relationship of his motherhood and Calder for the openness to space of his works. Space, in fact, enters Meggiato’s works and the void becomes as important as the full.

The artist models his sculptures inspired by the biomorphic fabric and by the labyrinth, which symbolizes the tortuous path of man in his attempt to find himself and to reveal his own precious inner sphere. Meggiato thus invents the concept of “introsculpture” in which the viewer’s gaze is drawn towards the interiority of the work, not limited to the external surfaces alone. “On a formal level, space and light do not delimit the work, slipping over it as if it were an all-round work, but penetrate into it, enveloping the grids and tangles and illuminating the central sphere as the ideal point of arrival”.

Since 1998 Meggiato has participated in exhibitions and fairs in Italy and abroad: USA, Canada, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Principality of Monaco, Ukraine, Russia, India, China, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, South Korea, Singapore, Taipei, Australia.
