The Third Paradise

Michelangelo Pistoletto, The Third Paradise

“The Third Paradise project consists of leading the artifice, that is science, technology, art, culture and politics, to give life back to Earth. Third Paradise means the passage to a new level of planetary civilization, something which is indispensable in order to ensure the survival of human kind” (Michelangelo Pistoletto).

We are pleased to invite you to the joint event in Singapore, graced with the presence of the internationally renowned artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, that will take place at the Singapore Mucciaccia Gallery and at the prestigious Nanyang Technological University. The solo show “The Third Paradise – Between Obverse and Reverse” will be presented Saturday 19th January at Mucciaccia Gallery from 6 to 8 PM. The title of the show refers to a new series of works by the artist that explores the relation between two sides of the mirror – the reflective and the opaque – and the development of the form. This research begins with the art piece “Fronte e retro, alto e basso – Trittico” which presents the symbol of the Third Paradise formed by four semi-circular mirrors – two obverse and two reverse.

On Monday 21st January at 11 AM, the artist will donate to the Nanyang Technological University Singapore – School of Art, Design and Media the “The Third Paradise – Il Terzo Paradiso”, with the support of Partners & Mucciaccia, under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy to Singapore. On the grass rooftop of the NTU School of Art, Design and Media, the universal symbol of the Third Paradise becomes a living installation. It is realised with local tropical plants.

In 1999 Cittadellarte established an educational and residential international program, named UNIDEE-University of Ideas, devoted to Art and Social Change. More than 5000 artists, scholars, curators, social entrepreneurs, and innovators of all walks of Life, have participated to UNIDEE and trained as ARtivators (i.e., activators of social change in their context via socially engaged art practices). UNIDEE recognizes the Third Paradise and the Art of Demopraxy as its pivotal, theoretical and practical grounds. The Third Paradise Symbol on the NTU Nanyang Technological University – School of Art, Design and Media iconic building represents a bridge between UNIDEE and this highly prestigious University and a possible path of joint research and educational programs towards making peace between humanity and the planet, also in accordance with United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, for which the Symbol of the Third Paradise represents an inspiring icon, which is placed as a permanent installation in front of the UN Building in Geneva.

On Tuesday 22nd January at 6:30 PMa panel dialogue between Maestro Michelangelo Pistoletto and the Nobel Laureate Ben Feringa on “Science meets art: how to shape the future of humanity” moderated by Profossor Em. Helga Nowotny (co-founding member and former President of the European Research Council) in her capacity as Nanyang Visiting Professor. The discussion is a “partners event” of the Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) and will be broadcast worldwide on the RAM radioartemobile website.

Michelangelo Pistoletto
Michelangelo Pistoletto was born in Biella in 1933. He began to exhibit his work in 1955 and in 1960 he had his first solo show at Galleria Galatea in Turin. In the two-year period 1961-1962 he made the first Mirror Paintings, which directly include the viewer and real-time in the work. These works quickly brought Pistoletto international acclaim, and in the sixties led  to solo shows in important galleries and museums in Europe and the United States. The Mirror Paintings are the foundation of his subsequent artistic output and theoretical thought.
In 1965 and 1966 he produced a set of works entitled Minus Objects, that have been considered fundamental to the birth of the Arte Povera mouvement. In 1967 he began to work outside traditional exhibition spaces, with the key goal of “creative collaboration” that he developed over the following decades by bringing together artists from different disciplines and diverse sectors of society.
During the nineties, with Project Art and with the creation in Biella of Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto and the University of Ideas, Pistoletto brought art into active relation with diverse spheres of society with the aim of inspiring and producing responsible social change. In 2003 he was awarded the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion for Lifelong Achievement. In 2004 he received the Laurea degree honoris causa in Political Sciences from the University of Turin. On that occasion the artist announced what has become the most recent phase of his work, the Third Paradise. In 2007, in Jerusalem, he received the Wolf Foundation Prize in the Arts.
In 2010 he wrote the essay The Third Paradise. In 2013 the Louvre Museum in Paris hosted his solo exhibition, and in Tokyo he received the Praemium Imperiale for painting. In May 2015 he received a degree honoris causa from the Universidad de las Artes of Havana in Cuba. In the same year he realised a work of large dimensions, called Rebirth, situated in the park of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, headquarters of the United Nations.

CITTADELLARTE – Fondazione Pistoletto

cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto was born with the 1994 Progetto Arte Manifesto, with which Michelangelo Pistoletto claims that “the time has come for artists to take on the responsibility of establishing ties among all other human activities, from economics to politics, science to religion, education to behaviour – in a word, among the threads that make up the fabric of society”. Cittadellarte, making this manifesto its own, instituted itself as a laboratory-school open to artists, entrepreneurs, social innovators, scientists, administrators, and politicians from all over the world characterized by a common commitment to develop practices of regeneration of every sector of society.

Cittadellarte operates in collaboration and in network with thousands of public and private subjects sharing its vision. Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto is a non-profit social utility based in Biella (Italy).

Nanyang Technological University Singapore School of Art, Design and Media

Art, Design and Media are ways that we explore, contemplate, and improve the world around us. It’s how we communicate our understanding of the natural, social, and built environments. To do this we apply sensitivity, aesthetics and ethics to all we create. Each artist and each artwork has a unique story, a special context, and a direct and potentially profound effect upon the world. This means that imagination, innovation, and critical thinking are fundamental.
The role that art, design, and media technologies play in the dialogue between cultures, and in transforming the way of life of people around the world is also an important consideration in all that we do. Because we are a young school located in Singapore in the heart of South East Asia, a major international port city that for hundreds of years has been the gateway between the East and West, new relationships between traditional and contemporary media, and local and world cultures are being pioneered here. We consider ADM to be a living laboratory, a model of the global community where respect for life and diversity is fundamental, and each student is an ambassador. We welcome those from all countries of South East Asia, Asia, and the larger international environment and encourage them to bring their special experience, knowledge and insights to their studies.
As our planet and its ecosystems are increasingly fragile, our collective responsibility as stewards of its resources means that our students are also asked to consider issues of sustainability in all that they do. Our green building, and our garden city and campus, are an inspiration to us all in this regard, a reminder of our ultimate goal of living in harmony with nature and the universe.
Finally, whether your interests are in fine art, photography, film, animation, interactive media, visual communication or product design we are committed to fostering your voice as an independent artist, designer or scholar by providing you with the conceptual and technical skills necessary for professional employment, research or advanced study in the arts and related fields.
With this, you will become part of an exciting new wave of dazzling talent that is already transforming Singapore into a major creative centre in South East Asia.
