Georges Mathieu 1952 – 1986

Georges Mathieu, 1965, Potencé Contre-Potencé, Oil on canvas cm. 97×195

Gallery Mucciaccia inaugurates its new headquarters Wednesday, 18th December with Georges Mathieu from 1952 to 1986 exhibition vernissage, curated by Dominique Stella.
On display about 40 significant works by the French inventor of the Abstraction Lyrique, illustrating exhaustively the artistic career of Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) between 1954 and 1986, thirty years that represents the milestones of his creative language. The artist after founding the movement of Abstraction Lyrique in 1947 turned his research towards a more explosive gestures, in the 60s, with a style more and more dynamic which is expressed in large canvases executed in the immediacy of performance; he has repeatedly said: “My painting is the painting of energy, fever, excitement, of life.” In this regard, the curator Dominique Stella says: “No one before him had been carried by a similar momentum from such spontaneity, such theatricality in the creation of paintings whose strength comes from movement and also the speed of execution.”
In his poetic sign precedes meaning and becomes the connection between the unconscious and the real world: it is perceived in engorgement clandestin Petit (1956), a work of poignant symbolism. The gesture of Mathieu, seemingly uncontrolled, translates the size of profound thought and complex that reflects and explores the past and present art history, painting on and on own experience. The artist, a participant in the cultural reality and contemporary politics, is very attracted by history, especially the Middle Ages, as seen in the work Potencé, Contre-Potencé (1965) that characterizes the heraldic period of the artist, where he studied weapons and arms that he translates in metaphorical signs. The same applies to the canvas Le Bassin de l’Ile d’Amour ou Adelbert Comte de Namur (1962), which evokes a character of the Middle Ages. The work is representative of a time of transition of the artistic career of Mathieu between minimalism and explosive language, in fact, the composition embodies harmony and at the same time a force impetuous.[:]
