Following Roberto Bernardi\u2019s great success in the United States and Europe, the artist comes to Asia, Singapore, with his first solo exhibition at Mucciaccia Gallery in Gillman Barrack, where he will exhibit his sweet and colourful world. Candyland exhibition\u00a0<\/span> Singapore art\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A leading exponent of hyperrealism, Roberto Bernardi approached American Pop Art when he was living and working in the United States. On one occasion, he visited Dylan’s Candy Bar, the largest candy store in the world, and was amazed at the variety of the candy. Inspired by this modern version of the Willy Wonka Factory with over seven thousand types of candies, he created his first \u2018candy\u2019 painting that was a huge success.<\/p>\n

Hyperrealism is the artistic current that aims to obtain a pictorial image similar to a photograph. Painting on canvas in a virtuous and very precise way, Bernardi succeeds by using the glazing method, the ancient technique that consists in applying very diluted oil colours over the underlying layer of color only once it has dried, so to obtain yet another color in transparency, which otherwise would be impossible to achieve.<\/p>\n

“Candyland” art exhibition is filled with his still life paintings of multicoloured and oversized candy, liquorice, lollipops wrapped in cellophane. Bernardi plays on the contrast between different emotions, inventing a dreamlike pictorial dimension. Indeed, Bernardi is not satisfied with the “real” reality: here he seeks (and finds) the traces of a “surreal” reality and uses it to move in each of us our subconscious emotions, to undermine our certainties and project us towards a new dimension. On the one hand the artist would like to send a reassuring message linked to our childhood and the sense of purity and innocence it brings, on the other, with the oversized objects, he gives us the inexplicable sense of restlessness of certain childhood dreams. candyland art exhibition<\/span><\/p>\n

There is nothing more evocative than a coloured sugar caramel cake, wrapped in transparent cellophane waiting to be unwrapped. These sweets certainly do bring back childhood memories, and in a playful manner, Bernardi reminds us of our childhood, and those wishes made of sugar, easy to realized and fulfilled after a brief whim. What is more sweeter and evocative.<\/p>\n

About the artist<\/h2>\n

Born in 1957 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Lives and works in New York.<\/span>
Holliday began as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute and later went on to perfect his techniques at The New York Studio School and The School of Visual Arts in New York. A Painter and performance artist connected to the Neo Abstract and Neo Expressionist Movement, Holliday reaches fame in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, is often associated with the East Village art scene and the Club 57.<\/span>
In the early years of his career as an artist, he worked closely with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Ann Magnuson and Kenny Scharf.<\/span>
Frank Holliday has exhibited with the Kenny Schacter and Tony Shafrazi Galleries and has solo exhibitions at Debs & Co., Tom Cugliani Gallery, The Kitchen, GAL Gallery, and Mucciaccia Gallery Singapore.<\/span>
He participates in numerous group exhibitions at prestigious New York spaces such as The Arts Club, Derek Eller, White Columns, Sandra Gering Gallery, Amy Lipton Gallery, Elizabeth Dee, Barbara Toll Fine Art, Lennon Weinberg, PS1, and the Club 57 with Keith Haring.<\/span>
His work receives critical acclaim and is the subject of reviews written by Holland Cotter and Stephen Westfall in Art in America, Gluek Grace and Ken Johnson for The New York Times, and Bill Arning for the Village Voice.<\/span>
Holliday is included in the Heiner Friedrich collection as well as numerous important private collections worldwide in the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and Mexico.<\/span>
His works are also found in prestigious museum collections such as Moma New York; The Weatherspoon Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; The Museum Frederick Russe of Stockholm; the Miniature Museum of Amsterdam.<\/span>
He is awarded the National Endowment for the Arts in 1986, the Gottlieb Foundation Fellowship in 2010, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2010 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2015.<\/span>
