Georges Mathieu

​(Fabriano 1929 – Trevi 2008) After attending the Art Institute of Urbino, in 1953 he moved to Rome. In 1956-57 begins the cycle of works called “Terre”, tables made with tuff, sand, ash and colored pigments. In 1958 he created the “Primocementoarmato”, a raw concrete tablet reinforced with mesh and iron and, from now on, he will continue to experiment with this material. In 1962, together with Gastone Biggi, Nicola Carrino, Nato Frascà, Achille Pace and Pasquale Santoro, he set up “Group One” for an enhancement of the social role in art. The series of “ferrocements” (1962 – 1965), that of “structures and spaces” (1965 – 1966), that of “Mattoni” (1969-1972) and “Ombre” (1972 – 1978), whose massive architectural presence it dialogues and confronts itself with its own shadow which is also constructed and made volume. The 80s are marked by “Dimore”, surfaces that give the idea of ​​an architectural landscape: buildings, doors, windows, thresholds and their shadow. Numerous personal and collective exhibitions: Bologna, Palazzo Re Enzo; Florence, The Quadrant; Venice, The Cavallino; Quadrennial of Rome; Venice Biennale; Turin, Christian Stein; and many others. In 1962 he was among the winners of the Spoleto Prize. In 1999 he exhibited at the PS1 in New York in Minimalia. In 2001 an important retrospective of Uncini’s work was held at the Stadtische Kunsthalle in Mannheim. The latest work is “Epistylium” (2007 – 2009), a large sculpture in reinforced concrete over six meters high, created for the outdoor exhibition space of the Mart in Rovereto.
