Partners & Mucciaccia Singapore is delighted to present\u00a0Eyedentity<\/em>, the first solo exhibition in Asia by the Franco-British artist Stephane Graff.<\/p>\n

Graff is strongly influenced by psychoanalytical theories, focusing mainly on the themes of identity and memory. His series of banquet paintings depicting large social gatherings explore the relationships between the ego versus collective identity, and between the observer and the observed within a social construct.<\/p>\n

Eyedentity<\/em>\u00a0will include a selection of works from the artist\u2019s most famous series, including the photorealistic monochrome \u201cBlack Box\u201d paintings (since 1991), in which the artist enigmatically conceals the\u00a0eyes\u00a0of his subjects creating a void and, at the same time, a bi-directional dialogue between the subjects and the spectator. Also on display will be his most recent \u201cGlitch Paintings\u201d (2016), which explore the impacts of the digital era upon image making. This body of work was originally inspired by images that the artist saw on the television, distorted by a powerful\u00a0electrical storm. These include a series of oil paintings drawn from Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s classic films\u00a0Rear Window\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Vertigo<\/em>.\u00a0As curator James\u00a0Putnam\u00a0wrote: \u201cGraff\u2019s unique techniques offer numerous variations of rearranging and distorting an image giving an animated effect similar to pixilation or the flickering of an old television and represents an interesting relationship between the analogue and digital\u201d.<\/p>\n

Eyedentity<\/em>\u00a0will also include the impressive\u00a0\u201cMille-Feuille\u201d oil paintings (2013 onwards), which\u00a0have been made on hundreds of strips of wood and then re-assembled to create effects of movement and distortion. This unique process, invented by Graff, blurs the boundaries between painting, photography and sculpture.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will be accompanied by a monograph and a catalogue with critical essays by Costantino D\u2019Orazio and James Putnam.<\/p>\n

About the artist<\/h2>\n

Born in 1957 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Lives and works in New York.<\/span>
Holliday began as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute and later went on to perfect his techniques at The New York Studio School and The School of Visual Arts in New York. A Painter and performance artist connected to the Neo Abstract and Neo Expressionist Movement, Holliday reaches fame in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, is often associated with the East Village art scene and the Club 57.<\/span>
In the early years of his career as an artist, he worked closely with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Ann Magnuson and Kenny Scharf.<\/span>
Frank Holliday has exhibited with the Kenny Schacter and Tony Shafrazi Galleries and has solo exhibitions at Debs & Co., Tom Cugliani Gallery, The Kitchen, GAL Gallery, and Mucciaccia Gallery Singapore.<\/span>
He participates in numerous group exhibitions at prestigious New York spaces such as The Arts Club, Derek Eller, White Columns, Sandra Gering Gallery, Amy Lipton Gallery, Elizabeth Dee, Barbara Toll Fine Art, Lennon Weinberg, PS1, and the Club 57 with Keith Haring.<\/span>
His work receives critical acclaim and is the subject of reviews written by Holland Cotter and Stephen Westfall in Art in America, Gluek Grace and Ken Johnson for The New York Times, and Bill Arning for the Village Voice.<\/span>
Holliday is included in the Heiner Friedrich collection as well as numerous important private collections worldwide in the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and Mexico.<\/span>
His works are also found in prestigious museum collections such as Moma New York; The Weatherspoon Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; The Museum Frederick Russe of Stockholm; the Miniature Museum of Amsterdam.<\/span>
He is awarded the National Endowment for the Arts in 1986, the Gottlieb Foundation Fellowship in 2010, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2010 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2015.<\/span>
His most recent exhibitions include\u00a0<\/span>Frank Holliday<\/em>, Museo Bilotti, Vila Borghese, Rome, Italy (2019) and\u00a0<\/span>Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978\u20131983<\/em>, MoMa in New York (2017-2018).<\/span><\/p>\n

Partners & Mucciaccia Singapore is delighted to present\u00a0Eyedentity<\/em>, the first solo exhibition in Asia by the Franco-British artist Stephane Graff.<\/p>\r\n

Graff is strongly influenced by psychoanalytical theories, focusing mainly on the themes of identity and memory. His series of banquet paintings depicting large social gatherings explore the relationships between the ego versus collective identity, and between the observer and the observed within a social construct.<\/p>\r\n

Eyedentity<\/em>\u00a0will include a selection of works from the artist\u2019s most famous series, including the photorealistic monochrome \"Black Box\" paintings (since 1991), in which the artist enigmatically conceals the\u00a0eyes\u00a0of his subjects creating a void and, at the same time, a bi-directional dialogue between the subjects and the spectator. Also on display will be his most recent \u201cGlitch Paintings\u201d (2016), which explore the impacts of the digital era upon image making. This body of work was originally inspired by images that the artist saw on the television, distorted by a powerful\u00a0electrical storm. These include a series of oil paintings drawn from Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s classic films\u00a0Rear Window\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Vertigo<\/em>.\u00a0As curator James\u00a0Putnam\u00a0wrote: \u201cGraff\u2019s unique techniques offer numerous variations of rearranging and distorting an image giving an animated effect similar to pixilation or the flickering of an old television and represents an interesting relationship between the analogue and digital\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

Eyedentity<\/em>\u00a0will also include the impressive\u00a0\"Mille-Feuille\" oil paintings (2013 onwards), which\u00a0have been made on hundreds of strips of wood and then re-assembled to create effects of movement and distortion. This unique process, invented by Graff, blurs the boundaries between painting, photography and sculpture.<\/p>\r\n

The exhibition will be accompanied by a monograph and a catalogue with critical essays by Costantino D'Orazio and James Putnam.<\/p>\r\nStephane Graff<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1965) is a Franco-British artist based in London. His practice is characterised by the use of analogue photographic techniques and photorealistic paintings. Having been influenced by the psychoanalytical traditions of Freud and Jung, and scientific methods, Graff, regularly addresses themes of identity, concealment, memory and a secular conception of the sacred.\u00a0His most extensive bodies of work are the \u201cBlack Box\u201d paintings, the \u201cConstrictions\u201d photographic series, and the \u201cMille-Feuille\u201d paintings, which are made on numerous strips of wood, combining the disciplines of painting and sculpture.
