Facebook, UFOs, and lightning striking the Eiffel Tower are just a few subjects that Cristiano Pintaldi\u2019s large scale paintings reveal in this new exhibition, entitled SPY.
Pintaldi\u2019s artistic research focuses on questioning reality, and SPY is no exception.
Pintaldi only seeks to shine a light on what we might have missed and, in turn, challenges our worldview, our preconceptions, what we take for granted as being obvious and true.
Pintaldi\u2019s paintings fully embody the vulnerability and loss of control that social media, newspapers and tv seem to impose, undetected, on contemporary society.
Cristiano Pintaldi\u2019s pictorial research is based on the reconstruction of visual space obtained through a procedure similar to that of video imaging. His paintings are in fact paintings according to the scrambling logic that is typical of electronic images, where the elementary units of information displayed on the screen is the pixel, with the three colour dots of red, green and blue. Depending on how far or close one stands to Pintaldi\u2019s paintings, it will determine what reality one sees.<\/p>\n

His innovative approach is reminiscent of George Seurat\u2019s \u201cNeo- Impressionism\u201d. Seurat\u2019s paintings possess \u2018parallel realities\u2019 \u2013 viewed from a certain distance a familiar scene appears luminous, slightly dreamy yet lifelike on the canvas but when viewed close-up, it reveals countless brush strokes of unmixed paint. Pintaldi\u2019s paintings hold the same principle. But whereas Seurat seemed to overlook the implications this aesthetic could have on how we relate to the world in general, Pintaldi does not.<\/p>\n

For Pintaldi, artistic technique is not just a means to an end, and optical illusions are not merely novel ways to entertain. How we approach artwork, in its making and viewing, reflects fundamental truths about ourselves and the world at large. Pintaldi puts up a mirror to both.<\/p>\n

About the artist<\/h2>\n

Born in 1957 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Lives and works in New York.<\/span>
Holliday began as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute and later went on to perfect his techniques at The New York Studio School and The School of Visual Arts in New York. A Painter and performance artist connected to the Neo Abstract and Neo Expressionist Movement, Holliday reaches fame in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, is often associated with the East Village art scene and the Club 57.<\/span>
In the early years of his career as an artist, he worked closely with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Ann Magnuson and Kenny Scharf.<\/span>
Frank Holliday has exhibited with the Kenny Schacter and Tony Shafrazi Galleries and has solo exhibitions at Debs & Co., Tom Cugliani Gallery, The Kitchen, GAL Gallery, and Mucciaccia Gallery Singapore.<\/span>
He participates in numerous group exhibitions at prestigious New York spaces such as The Arts Club, Derek Eller, White Columns, Sandra Gering Gallery, Amy Lipton Gallery, Elizabeth Dee, Barbara Toll Fine Art, Lennon Weinberg, PS1, and the Club 57 with Keith Haring.<\/span>
His work receives critical acclaim and is the subject of reviews written by Holland Cotter and Stephen Westfall in Art in America, Gluek Grace and Ken Johnson for The New York Times, and Bill Arning for the Village Voice.<\/span>
Holliday is included in the Heiner Friedrich collection as well as numerous important private collections worldwide in the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and Mexico.<\/span>
His works are also found in prestigious museum collections such as Moma New York; The Weatherspoon Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; The Museum Frederick Russe of Stockholm; the Miniature Museum of Amsterdam.<\/span>
He is awarded the National Endowment for the Arts in 1986, the Gottlieb Foundation Fellowship in 2010, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2010 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2015.<\/span>
His most recent exhibitions include\u00a0<\/span>Frank Holliday<\/em>, Museo Bilotti, Vila Borghese, Rome, Italy (2019) and\u00a0<\/span>Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978\u20131983<\/em>, MoMa in New York (2017-2018).<\/span><\/p>\n

Partners & Mucciaccia is pleased to announce SPY the new UK solo exhibition of Cristiano Pintaldi.\r\nFacebook, UFOs, and lightning striking the Eiffel Tower are just a few subjects that Cristiano Pintaldi\u2019s large scale paintings reveal in this new exhibition, entitled SPY.\r\nPintaldi\u2019s artistic research focuses on questioning reality, and SPY is no exception.\r\nPintaldi only seeks to shine a light on what we might have missed and, in turn, challenges our worldview, our preconceptions, what we take for granted as being obvious and true.\r\nPintaldi\u2019s paintings fully embody the vulnerability and loss of control that social media, newspapers and tv seem to impose, undetected, on contemporary society.\r\nCristiano Pintaldi\u2019s pictorial research is based on the reconstruction of visual space obtained through a procedure similar to that of video imaging. His paintings are in fact paintings according to the scrambling logic that is typical of electronic images, where the elementary units of information displayed on the screen is the pixel, with the three colour dots of red, green and blue. Depending on how far or close one stands to Pintaldi\u2019s\r\npaintings, it will determine what reality one sees.\r\n\r\nHis innovative approach is reminiscent of George Seurat\u2019s \u201cNeo- Impressionism\u201d. Seurat's paintings possess 'parallel realities' - viewed from a certain distance a familiar scene appears luminous, slightly dreamy yet lifelike on the canvas but when viewed close-up, it reveals countless brush strokes of unmixed paint. Pintaldi's paintings hold the same principle. But whereas Seurat seemed to overlook the implications this aesthetic could have on how we relate to the world in general, Pintaldi does not.\r\n\r\nFor Pintaldi, artistic technique is not just a means to an end, and optical illusions are not merely novel ways to entertain. How we approach artwork, in its making and viewing, reflects fundamental truths about ourselves and the world at large. Pintaldi puts up a mirror to both.\r\n
