Sue Harrowsmith

Sue Arrowsmith was born in 1968 in Manchester UK. She graduated from Goldsmith’s College in 1990 and lives and works in London.

She photographs trees on walks in her local area, capturing these images on 35 millimetre slide film. Once these are processed, she projects them onto her studio wall. She uses inks and acrylics and paints directly onto a prepared surface usually aluminium panel coated with watercolour or more recently gilded metal. These precious metals have become integral to the artists practise as they allow greater play with light.

Changing during the day, the images dance and move across the surface, which is never still. Painting fluidly and at speed, drips and blobs accumulate to make up an image that becomes more abstracted from the original as it unfolds. The artist states, “I am interested in exploring themes of light, gesture and space through the energy and rhythm of mark-making”. Sue Arrowsmith has exhibited widely across Europe and in the UK.
