Fiona Rae
It is difficult to think of an artist better poised to realise what colour can achieve on the canvas than Fiona Rae. The works in this exhibition represent a distillation of experience honed from working in her chosen medium for more than 30 years, in the course of which she has employed a staggering range of brush strokes, colours of every shade and tone as well as a lexicon of graphics and symbols weaved together in a way seemingly impossible to pull off. The colours burst like fireworks in hues of fizzing yellow, purple, blue, green, orange and pink with brush-strokes that perform arabesques, dart off in feathery forms, swirl in ribbons, dissolve into vaporous clouds or form into her distinctive strobing lines, shooting stars, calligraphic marks and gravity defying intersections. Though permanently fixed in oil her forms are imbued with a quality of evanescence, as if each element might float around, then vanish into the ether.
